Picks of the week
Jigsaw Causeway (album) – Novelty Island
Novelty Island is a a seriously talented musician, and fourth album Jigsaw Causeway is a showcase of his alternative approach to writing that sounds like it could have come straight out of the 1960s.
Foam Animals is arguably the highlight of the LP. Listed as track four, it has an almost psychedelic feel while retaining a memorable chorus.
The artwork, promotion and sound of the album have been put together to produce a cohesive campaign that also includes an accompanying exhibition, open from 12pm-4pm every day until October 9 at Bridewell Studios and Gallery.

River Song – Ria Hanley
Ria Hanley has a habit of absorbing you with the first lines of her songs.
There is an abraded truth in her words, something she has touched upon: “[It was] written to let out everything I was feeling, not written for an algorithm or for a ‘hook’, but I think the songs that are vulnerable and real end up being the best ones.”
River Song is more laid back than some of her previous releases, but the acoustic nature of the new single is just as entrancing.

Broken Melody – Dr Orange ft. Blue Jean
Another acoustic song, Broken Melody takes a step back from Dr Orange’s world of rock and roll to introduce featured artist Blue Jean.
Her sole voice opens the record, before her male accompaniment joins in harmonising the melody.
Produced by Jon Withnall, who has worked with the likes of Coldplay, The Coral and Rihanna, Broken Melody blends both artists’ alternative sounds while offering a glimpse into their more tender, introspective sides.
