Picks of the week

Chemistry EP – Katie Nicholas

Katie Nicholas’ blend of folk, country and pop relaxes the mind as her smooth vocals float through the air and slowly infiltrate your senses.

The title track, Chemistry, is arguably the highlight of this EP which Nicholas said is the record her “younger self would have dreamt of making.”

Chemistry opens the EP and the song begins slowly before incorporating banjo and eventually entering a catchy chorus accompanied by a string section.

The verses’ lyrics act as the attention-grabber for this song, as the artistic wordplay creates vivid images in the head that is soon engulfed by a great chorus.

If You Don’t Try – Keyside

This group are proving their versatility with every song and are heading out on their UK tour in November.

If You Don’t Try doesn’t quite follow the traditional pattern of a Keyside song front man Dan Parker doesn’t even play his treasured acoustic guitar during the verses.

Instead, the intriguing lyrics take precedent as he leads us through a historical web of famous figures.

Parker said: “It blends historical metaphor, personal emotion and modern imagery to say, ‘F**k it! Let’s give it a go, see what happens if we try’.”

Peace In Your Sound – Jamie Higgs

Fresh from a packed show at ARC, Liverpool, Jamie Higgs has released his second single, Peace In Your Soud.

A superb piece of indie-rock, the track proves Higgs can write touching, acoustic songs as well as heavier tunes full of layered guitars and hard-hitting drums.

This number really brings out the best in the singer’s voice, with the emotion almost grasping to escape his lungs.
