The Gardening Club – A new pop-rock musical in Liverpool

The Gardening Club is a brand new pop-rock musical, written by Carleigh McRitchie and Bella Wright, premiering in Liverpool.

The work that goes into writing a show, never mind one featuring non-stop musical numbers, is phenomenal.

Such is the time required to create a production, the writers began the project when they were 19 and, now in their twenties, are debuting the show at The George Harrison Workshop Studio, LIPA.

The Liverpool-based writer-directors, Wright and McRitchie, originally hail from the USA, and use their home country as the backdrop to the story.

Set in 1960s Georgia, the plot follows six girls who set up an illegal, secret drug ring to distribute the birth control pill, using their gardening club as a cover-up.

The story is liberal and full of funny, relatable characters who tell the story through the pop-rock soundtrack.

The writers said: “The Gardening Club explores the world of identity, healthcare transparency and gender equality in the 1950s – issues that are still relevant to today and will echo in the years to come.”

Birth control in the southern states of America can still be a controversial topic, and many of the themes remain relevant, despite being set 60 years ago.

The show will take place on Friday, March 22 at 8pm (GMT) and Saturday, March 23 at 3pm and 8pm.
