The Royston Club’s long-awaited debut album, Shaking Hips and Crashing Cars, is here and it’s brilliant.
Band members:
Tom Faithfull – lead vocals and rhythm guitar
Ben Matthias – lead guitar and songs
Sam Jones – drums
Dave Tute – bass
Shaking Hips and Crashing Cars is the culmination of four years hard work by the band, originally from Wrexham but now based in Liverpool.
In recent years, they have gained a big following in the North West thanks to the success of singles such as Mrs Narcissistic and Shawshank – now labelled as a demo.
The former is arguably their biggest hit and makes it onto the album alongside 12 other tracks, most of which fans have heard before, but with just enough new material to make the album worth its salt.
In short, Shaking Hips and Crashing Cars is a brilliant piece of indie rock by a quartet of down-to-earth lads.
What starts as a rebellion against the emotional turbulence of young lives, turns into a more melancholic reflection of their troubles and relationships, by the album’s end.
The LP opens with three songs that will rival anything released this year.
By chance or design, the opener, The Deep End, throws you straight into ‘the deep end’ before Shallow Tragedy wows with its catchy riff and memorable chorus.
Mrs Narcissistic follows and the album continues to wow, with popular songs including Cold Sweats, Mariana, Blisters and Believe it or Not.
Cold Sweats, in particular, gets better with every listen.
The song builds beautifully into a truth-telling chorus with the help of the lead guitar’s intro, which is a change in tone from the rest of the album’s driven chords and riffs.
Shaking Hips and Crashing Cars will have you dancing, singing along and tearing up in equal measure.
We can’t wait to hear what’s next for The Royston Club.
