Fiona Lennon releases Stay High – Single Review

After gaining some prominence on the scene with her live performances at Sound City and the likes, Fiona Lennon has released her third single, Stay High.

Having recently supported Brook Combe at the O2 Academy, Fiona is back with her first release since 2021 – and she’s here with her band.

Unlike her previous release, ‘A Little Longer’, which is guitar-led with rocky tones, this new song is a slower, melodic track that is closer to ‘You Really Got a Hold on Me’ in style.

Serving to relax the muscles and mind, this is an example of the songwriter telling a story from another perspective.

She uses emotive lyrics and her ethereal voice to speak feelings from the viewpoint of someone going through a break-up, but wishing them well.

Fiona thinks it’s ‘something everyone can relate to at some point in life.’

As well as Fiona, the band consists of Jack Lennon on lead guitar and backing vocals; Jack McCabe on piano and backing vocals; Sean Burns on drums and Elliot Chinnock on bass.

Jack’s lead guitar is perfectly complemented by McCabe’s delicate piano playing that adds an airy feel to the song.

Burns’ drums are used to build the track into the chorus featuring backing vocals that fit perfectly within the context of the single.

It then seamlessly drops back into the verse and so the cycle starts again.

With Fiona penning the final line of the song as “You told me that I never should change, but who said I’m supposed to stay the same,” the ending leaves you pondering your own situation and the changes that happen throughout life.

From live performances, we can tell you there is plenty more to come from Fiona, both slower and upbeat.
