Sunflowers by Georgia Johnson – Single Review

Georgia Johnson Sunflowers

Liverpool singer-songwriter, Georgia Johnson recently released her debut single, Sunflowers (Still Grow In Darkness).

Having built a good following in recent years playing live around Merseyside, Johnson decided the time was right to release her first single, Sunflowers.

The song, produced by Joe Sage, takes a mellow tone and has hints of Eva Cassidy’s Autumn Leaves – Johnson’s vocals are similarly soft and the lyrics of both use nature to contextualise their stories.

Sunflowers has an eerie beginning but captures your concentration with the keyboard’s increased presence and instant impact of the statement ‘Sunflowers still grow in darkness’.

As the song progresses, the use of sunflowers as a metaphor gradually transitions out and the artist describes the person’s emotions through human actions.

It’s a song about standing up in the face of adversity, whether that be physical or mental, and being your best self.

After a big chorus, the song ends nicely with an outro that’s played on what sounds almost like a church organ, again adding a reflective feel to the song.

The self-described ‘Scouse Phoebe Bridgers’ said: I wrote Sunflowers almost a year ago now.

“I’d had the tune in my head for a while and one night I just sat on the bathroom floor; guitar, pen, paper and phone; and got it all down…

“It’s just grown from there.”

Georgia’s next live appearance on Merseyside is supporting The Sukis at the Kazmier Stockroom on March 16, 2023.
