Gone Fishing by Indoor Shoes – EP Review

They’ve been together for less than two years but with over 40 live shows already to their name, Indoor Shoes are making a name for themselves in the North West.

Sam Millne reviews their newest EP, Gone Fishing…

The band, a quartet of creative individuals with different musical inspirations, has just released their second EP, Gone Fishing.

After the success of their first release in 2021, The Pink and Blue EP, Indoor Shoes’ two new tracks continue in the same relaxed vein.

The music, written by guitarist Tommy Tyres, is self-described as indie/alternative rock but that is a wide genre and I’d personally put Indoor Shoes’ released music to date more towards the alternative end of that spectrum.

Gone Fishing was recorded at Vulcan Studios in Liverpool and opens with a simple guitar riff using a 60s-sounding tone that emanates an almost-bluesy feel to it once the drums kick in.

The 2 minutes and 42 seconds blend nicely into each other as singer Evan Johnson’s vocals compliment Tyres’ lead guitar parts nicely, before the track slowly fades out.

The B-side, called Jamie’s Song, starts off similarly slow but builds into a rockier track while managing to remain constrained, especially in the lead’s solo, which acts as a good transition into the second half of the song.

The chorus definitely shows off Johnson’s vocal range, and the slightly more driven aspect of Jamie’s Song gives it the edge over Gone Fishing, for me, on what is a strong EP.

Indoor Shoes’ next headline gig is at Salty Dog in Northwich but you can catch them at the Shipping Forecast in Liverpool on March 11.
