Julie Myhre: Artist Q&A

Norwegian artist, Julie Myhre has just released her third single and spoke about how she has assimilated into Liverpool life.

When and how did you start playing music?

I am not sure at what exact age I started playing music myself, but I was a quite-introverted kid and I was very drawn to music.

At some point, I figured out I enjoyed singing and I found it to be a way to express myself. I started playing a bit of guitar in my early teens.

What brought you to Merseyside and why did you choose Liverpool?

It was actually a bit of a coincidence.

A good friend of mine moved to Liverpool to study music at LIPA (Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts) after college so I visited her and fell in love with the city a bit more than I intended to.

I had considered studying at a music university so I decided to apply for LIPA and got in. I graduated last year but Liverpool still feels like a second home to me.

Liverpool’s got a grey maritime atmosphere which I really enjoy, I also knew I needed to live in a place where it rains a lot which makes this city a great match for me.

How does the music scene in Liverpool compare to back home?

I come from a quite small city (Langesund) but there is a local music scene which will always mean a lot to me as the local venues were the ones I started performing my own music in.

When it comes to genres, I would say Liverpool’s got a bit more variety in genres.

Back home it is a lot of rock, blues and Americana – which I enjoy but it has been inspiring discovering a wider music scene here in Liverpool, where there are gigs and open mics on every day.

When did you start writing songs?

I didn’t start writing my own songs until I was in my late teenage years, but I have some old notebooks with a bit of writing in them.

I don’t think they were intended to be songs but I enjoyed writing down thoughts and imagery before I started putting music to them.

How would you describe your style and who are your musical inspirations?

I would describe it as indie-folk and maybe a little bit of Nordicana, a Scandinavian version of Americana.

I am inspired by artists like Neko Case, Leonard Cohen, First Aid Kit and Alela Diane, so, both old and new folk musicians.

What’s next?

I just released my song ‘The End of Summer Blues’, and I am currently working on recording some more new songs.
