LARO: Artist Q&A

Lauren Worthy has had several plays on BBC Introducing and is currently recording her first EP. Sam Millne caught up with LARO to see what’s next…

When did you start playing music?

I’m pretty sure I learnt to sing before I could talk!

My debut performance was a good old-school assembly which makes me cringe now but if I wasn’t pushed to do it, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Back then, only a very small circle of people knew I sang. My music teacher in high school heard me harmonising with a friend in a rehearsal room and he was adamant that people needed to hear my voice.

It’s been quite the journey confidence-wise but I’ll always be so thankful for that teacher.

Who’s your musical inspiration?

I have sooo many.

I’m very much into my female guitar pop at the minute, so the names that stand out are Holly Humberstone, Dylan and Maisie Peters. But, lyrically Gracie Abrams has me in awe with every release.

She has such a way with words and I can only admire it. And, as a huge Swiftie (Taylor Swift fan), I have to give an honourable mention to Taylor Swift.

When did you start writing songs?

I think I wrote my first song when I was 13 and it was so bad but we all start somewhere!

I used to write poetry before I started playing piano at about 17, so I was always a lyrics before-chords and melody kind of girl until quite recently. But, since I started writing, I haven’t stopped. It’s a huge part of my life and I hope it always will be.

How would you describe your style?

This is always a tricky one! Right now, I definitely fit into a subcategory of pop but I wouldn’t say I’d ever be mainstream.

I’m definitely still not 100% set on my sound so working through the tracks on my debut EP has been a great way to explore that, but with whatever pathway LARO takes, people can expect girl power; lots of bright block colour; and a whole lot of sass and honesty!

What’s next?

So, I have been working on my debut EP for the past 2 years and releasing it track by track, so the next song to come out is track four which is also the penultimate song.

Without giving too much away, people can expect something a little different. It was a song fuelled by sass, and I guess you could say anger, and it’s my favourite so far.

Once this EP era is completely done, I just want to gig as much as I can and keep making new connections in the industry; but for now, keep an eye out for the next spoilers!
